The planet Jupiter was named after the ruler of the gods in Roman mythology, it’s the 5th planet from the sun, and is the largest planet in our solar system, not only that but Jupiter is also a melodious movement that makes a magnificent use of dynamics, tempo, key changes, and passing melodies from instrument to instrument. Gustav Holst made sure that every instrument gets some sort of feature or part here which is one thing that I really love about this piece. The composition and layers displayed in this piece is outstanding. Gustav Holst was well known for his strong writing of music, but his claim to fame came when he created The Planets.
Jupiter is one out of the 7 movements in the The Planets suite. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character, and Jupiter just so happens to be my favorite.
Jupiter is a fantastic song, and the best of the entire The Planets suite in my opinion. Sure the other songs such as Mars, Saturn, and Mercury have there moments, but I feel that Jupiter really represents a great whoah of power and beauty.
By allowing different instruments in the piece to play the melodies, it keeps the listener interested and the piece great fluidity. In the beginning, it’s mostly violins and violas that guide the piece to the 2nd violins. They dominate in the beginning of the piece by having the fortes in the best spots and the most powerful by far. The violas later carry the melody and then the cellos and bass keep a beautiful, booming tempo. One of my favorite parts in this piece is how the violas and the cellos guiding the melody from measures 35 to 43 and how the different volumes and tones in the instruments combine to create the movement.
I love the melodious layers and shared instrumentation that are in this song. All the small complexities of the song lead to something that is more than the sum of its parts, something more than just a song. Making Jupiter a very memorable piece in a fantastic suite.
