Deborah Monday is an active bass performer and private teacher. She has 5 strings series and 15 of her own arrangements and 40 strings publications. Currently teaching in the Logan City School District Orchestra Program, Deborah works with 4th through 8th grade students in up to 8 different schools. Ms. Monday has published a number of pieces for string orchestras with several leading educational music publishers. She even co-authored the “Strings Extraordinaire” collection and has presented various clinics at Music Educators’ Conferences.
Monday has composed many amazing pieces such as Jupiter, Slavonic Legends and other well-known pieces. She has published a number of pieces for string orchestra with several leading music publishers. She is also well known for conducting solid string teaching through balanced string orchestra compositions and arrangements and she is by far one of my favorite composers.
Synergy was composed by Debora Baker Monday. This level 3 piece is one of the first pieces I ever learned how to play on first violin and will always be one of my favorites. I remember playing it in one of my first concerts. At the time this song was by far the most challenging of all that we had to play. But knowing this gave me perseverance to complete long practice hours in order to improve. Learning perseverance is actually one of the major benefits of playing violin in my opinion. It helps you learn a lot about hard work. Little else in life is as rewarding as that.
Its mild intensity and vigor make it a great piece for beginning violinist to learn. If you love everything that’s simple and wonderful about violin music; this piece is for you. Synergy is a stunning piece of orchestra music.

The position shifting work for violin I makes this simple piece even more challenging. There’s never a dull moment in this dynamic original, full of driving rhythmic elements and gorgeous chordal textures. Students will strive to achieve a rich harmony throughout. The contrasting middle section allows for more sensitive, expressive playing, then the energy resumes, pushing the piece to a strong ending. The overall effect of the work is greater than the sum of its parts.
One thing I truly love about this song is its different string movements, to give it a completely different and unique sound to match its intense and strong yet simple tone. For example, at measure 59-60 there is a great accelerando and forte after its brief section of peaceful pianos and andantes. This is what I feel gives a song its feeing, and inspires others to play it and express their feelings through the music.
One of my favorite parts of this piece by far would have to be 67-77 and its unique sound. I love how in the middle of the section, it comes to a quicker pace and a louder sound giving the piece its intensity through its pace.
Whenever I play this song and I’m coming to the last few measures, I remember playing this song with my class and my teacher telling us to play measure 95 right on the bridge of our violins. It gave the ending of the song a powerful and rugged ending, making the ending of the piece louder, godlier, and giving it an affect it would never have before.
